About Friends of CIHR

Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR) was created to promote the value of health research and establish community-based partnerships.

The organization began as an association of alumnae of the Medical Research Council of Canada (MRC) to promote the goals and values of MRC, thereby enhancing its profile. Thus, Alumni and Friends of MRC was established, dedicated to expanding public understanding of the importance of health research to the well being of society.

Alumni and Friends of MRC collaborated widely with community-based organizations that shared an interest in progressive medical research and actively sought partnerships to promote that purpose. Through published newsletters, the group informed university and government officials of important activities.

In 2000, an Act of Parliament established a new organization, Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), as the major federal agency responsible for funding health research in Canada, effectively replacing the MRC. The members of Alumni and Friends of MRC felt strongly that the new organization must be supported and that the high values and research standards maintained over the 40 years of MRC’s operation be preserved. A new mandate and a new name, Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR) were officially adopted in 2001.

Since 2001, Friends has specifically supported the goals and initiatives of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and has expanded its role to represent all health disciplines.

Les Amis des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (AIRSC) est un organisme créé dans le but de promouvoir la valeur de la recherche en santé et d’établir des partenariats communautaires.

L’organisme a vu le jour en tant qu’association d’anciens du Conseil de recherches médicales du Canada (CRM). Cette association faisait la promotion des objectifs et des valeurs du CRM, accroissant ainsi sa visibilité. C’est ainsi qu’a été fondé l’organisme Anciens et Amis du CRM qui s’employait à mieux faire comprendre au public l’importance de la recherche en santé pour le mieux-être de la société.

Les Anciens et Amis du CRM ont beaucoup collaboré avec les organisations communautaires qui s’intéressaient aussi à l’évolution de la recherche médicale et se sont efforcés d’établir des partenariats pour en faire la promotion. Au moyen de bulletins d’information, le groupe tenait les représentants des universités et du gouvernement au courant des activités importantes.

En 2000, une loi du Parlement a entériné la fondation d’un nouvel organisme, les Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (IRSC). Les IRSC devenaient ainsi l’organisme responsable du financement de la recherche en santé au Canada, remplaçant effectivement le CRM. Les membres des Anciens et Amis du CRM étaient convaincus qu’il fallait appuyer le nouvel organisme et préserver les valeurs et les normes de recherche élevées qu’on avait su maintenir pendant les 40 ans d’existence du CRM. C’est ainsi que, en 2001, une nouvelle mission et un nouveau nom, les Amis des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (AIRSC), ont été adoptés.

Depuis 2001, les AIRSC ont expressément appuyé les objectifs et les initiatives des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (IRSC) et ont élargi leur rôle afin de représenter toutes les disciplines de la santé.
